A lot of thermographic applications require consistent measurements. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. In addition, there is a need for knowledge of thermography to recognize problems. As a result, wrong conclusions are drawn, which can cause short- or long-term problems.
2 Tips for consistent measurements with a thermal camera
1. Choose a representative time
Thermography is a snapshot in time. The camera will measure the temperature occurring at that moment.
Therefore, timing plays an important role. Perform the thermographic measurement at a time representative of normal operations. For example, consider checking a meter box in a factory building. There, it is not interesting to take measurements when production is down. You only get a realistic picture when all machines and equipment are working as they do on a typical workday.
2. Take frequent measurements
Another solution is to take measurements at regular intervals. Schedule daily/weekly/monthly... a checkup to identify abnormalities. If readings are fairly stable, you can reduce the frequency.
Sometimes permanent monitoring is recommended. In this solution, a fixed thermal imaging camera is installed to monitor a meter box, machine, production line or warehouse.
