Behind the scenes: How thermal video takes the presentation of a new sports collection to the next level

Can it be a little different with thermography? A thermal imaging camera that converts infrared energy into a thermal image is useful for numerous applications. Detecting construction-related problems, electrical system maintenance, fire prevention, science, medical applications, gas visualization, process monitoring and so much more.

From Freshmen media, we were asked if Thermal Focus could support to capture the positive energy of a connecting sport. Cheering supporters, athletes, and a great vibe captured in images with several high end thermal imaging cameras from Teledyne FLIR. Using various FLIR T series cameras on behalf of their client, they made this beautiful end result.

Freshmen Media is an Amsterdam-based production house that has been creating content for a variety of markets and audiences since 2007. In recent years they specialize mainly in younger audiences, lifestyle and sports. They distinguish themselves in the market by their fresh, cheerful and colorful approach without losing sight of quality and cinematic feel.

Joep and Jeff of Freshmen Media went looking for thermal cameras for their client's project. “We were contacted by one of our regular clients, creative agency in sport One: Nil, for an assignment at Ajax.”, Joep tells us. “It's a long-standing collaboration within which the client gives us a lot of creative freedom to take projects to a new level.”

The project was part of a bigger picture and involved an additional shirt and matching clothing line of Adidas and ID&T, based on 750 years of Amsterdam and the connection between the city, Amsterdam nightlife and dance music. “With a design inspired by heat patterns of the human body, the choice to continue this in the video was almost a given.”, said Joep.

The idea for a combination of live image with thermal image was quickly formed and that's how Freshmen Media ended up with Thermal Focus. “Because we did not want to fake this in post-production, but really wanted it on camera, we started looking for a party that could help us with so-called heatcams. We ended up at Thermal Focus who had exactly what we were looking for.

Together with Freshmen Media, we set out to find the appropriate cameras for their project. During the demonstrations, we compared different cameras and lenses for quality, as well as flexibility and editing capabilities. The video was to be filmed visually and thermally at the same time. So the thermal cameras had to be able to be mounted on the film cameras. This is how we ended up with the FLIR T530, T560 and T865 thermal imaging cameras. These user-friendly, ergonomic cameras are easy to mount and provide a nice, clear and quality image.

In an interactive museum, the shoot for the clothing line went on. Then the video was played in the stadium at the emergence of the players wearing the new clothing line. This turnout and the accompanying light and fireworks show were also captured with the film cameras topped with heat cameras. “During the competition, we edited and mixed this footage resulting in a unique compilation video.”, said Jeff of Freshmen Media.
